There are several types of Schengen visa but the most common (the short-stay visa) allows travelers to stay for 90 days maximum over a 6 month period starting from the entry date stated on the visa.

Visa-Free Countries need to apply for ETIAS prior to boarding - schengen visa application.
The ETIAS application form will be obtained through a simple online process that will be completed quickly. In the vast majority of cases, an authorization should be given in a matter of minutes. The whole online registration and application process will not require more than 10 minutes per applicant.
The only official document that travelers need to complete the online application is a biometric passport. They will also need an email address and a debit or credit card. Biometric passports are preferred for their security advantages such as preventing unauthorized reading or “skimming” of the passport information. Although it may not be obligatory to have an electronic passport, a valid passport is required to register with the ETIAS system.
According to the experience of other countries with similar travel authorization systems (US, Canada, Australia), an estimated 95% of applications, or more, would be approved and would be communicated to applicants within minutes. Fingerprints and other biometric data would not be collected.
Once the ETIAS registration and application process is complete, submitted and approved, the ETIAS travel authorization document will be issued and valid for 3 consecutive years.
Once issued, a valid authorisation will allow its holder to stay in 26 different countries in Europe for a period of up to 90 days in any 180-day period and it is valid for 3 years from the date of issuance or until the expiry date of the passport, whichever comes first.
